General Thoughts to Start

  • General Thoughts to Start

    Risks

    • Single Company outcompeting all local journalists
    • Bad actors generating complex and difficult to dispel lies
    • Sloppy/lazy journalism
    • Foreign bad actors both private and state
    • Human differance to ai
    • For instance if a chat bot is created to assist citizen’s navigating laws and codes. Officials may simply differ to the ai b/c of ease regardless of accuracy.
    • The risk is that the ai may be allowed to create rules or laws or interpretations de facto.

    Benefits

    • Increased capacity for telling stories
    • Increased capacity for gathering data
    • Story optimization ( many ways to interpret this)

What’s left for human generated content?

    • Content that isn’t readily accessible or available to ai. Such as individual’s solicited comments
    • Bringing attention to ignored stuff
    • Investigative Journalism
    • Human interest stories.
    • Being a human
    • Artisan
    • Acting as 3rd parties in information/Propaganda campaigns ( discerning the truth from the lies)
    • Personal experiences
    • Personal opinions
    • Be champions of truth
    • Secrets and data that require foia
    • ai will likely use engagement as a means to verify or determine value or relevance of a story. However, relevance may not be something that is predictable. Somethings must be said that are not necessarily desired to be heard.
    • Subversion of government censorship
    • Guardians of Reality
    • Exposing truths ( bad cops, etc…)
    • Empathy

Is there any reason to worry about hyper hyper local news. That is news that is custom generated for a single person? Does this increase the chance of malicious individuals attempting to manipulate public or individual opinions?? Perhaps this is where newspapers/orgs can stay relevant. They can provide accurate non engineered news. This would make a good white paper

    White paper topics

    • Ethical use of ai in journalism
    • Bylines…
    • Maintaining relevance
    • Threats to truth. How to counter ill intended agents who will use ai to fabricate lies.
    • Ai access to local news content. Should we block ai’s from accessing our content?

AI as a tool in Journalism

    • User specific display ads

Big question what value will humans add to the journalistic process in an ai world ?

    • Human Will
    • Trust

Need to increase our interaction with students/the next generation

    As a Tool

    • Use it to scrape the internet for leads
    • Can we build something that follows criminal charges from arrest to conviction or exoneration?

    Challenges

    • Convincing a society with limitless access to ai content that local news still has value and should be supported.

    Possibly Manifestation

    • Custom content generated on demand

    Solutions and ideas

    • AI search engines should be charged a fee for using any content from a newspaper. Fee should be set by the publisher and be present in an ai.txt file
